Homemade Terrarium
Terrariums bring a serene slice of the outdoors inside, they also work with any style – from super sleek to happily cluttered. Watching these little worlds thrive behind glass is not only visually appealing but kind of soothing too and it’s a great way of extending the life of your empty Folláin jars, while creating your own personalised mini ecosystem.
Prep time: 20 mins
Materials
- Empty Folláin jars
- Small pebbles or gravel
- Activated charcoal (optional but recommended)
- Potting soil suitable for succulents or small houseplants
- Small plants or succulents
- Decorative elements (like moss, small figurines, or stones)
- A spoon or small shovel
- Water
- We also hung our finished terrarium using some simple twine
Method
- Ensure jar is clean and dry
- Start by adding a layer of small pebbles or gravel to the bottom of the jar, which will act as drainage to prevent water from pooling at the bottom and potentially rotting the plant roots- aim for about a 2-3 cm layer
- Sprinkle a thin layer of activated charcoal over the pebbles, which helps filter the air and water within the terrarium, keeping it fresh
- Over the charcoal, add a layer of potting soil
- Before planting, plan your layout. Once ready, make a small hole in the soil with your spoon or shovel, place your plant inside, and gently firm the soil around it. If you're using succulents, leave some space between them as they grow
- Add moss, stones, or small decorative figures to personalise your terrarium
